The production of salt, valuable for the conservation of foods, and its geographical situation, Aveiro make a major maritime and commercial center.
Once a major seaport, Aveiro is known for the charms of its channels, and especially of the estuary, which links this calm city to the sea. Ria de Aveiro is the result of the retreat of the sea, with the formation of coastal strips that, from the sixth century XVI, formed a lagoon.
